The State of Internet

Akamai had the bright idea to publish a quarterly report about the state of the internet. The first chapter shows security issues - 2% of the internet-traffic is from DDoS-Attacks, while ports for Windows RPC and SSH are the most attacked. Most attacks come from china, the US, and South-America. Scandinavia stands out in the internet penetration and South Korea is leading the high broadband penetration per capita. Romania ranks on place five of high broadband penetration with 21% while Slovakia and Tunisia have a unexpected >2Mbps penetration of 81+%

The unique IP address penetration is estimated to be around 30% of the overall 1 billion users per day and the leading country Sweden has a ratio of 0.4 IPs per capita.

A good coverage of the results can be found at http://www.xconomy.com/2008/05/29/akamai-details-winners-losers-in-broadband-race/
